Sun, Sea, and... Why Am I Wearing double socks indoors?

So, you’re moving to Cyprus! Welcome to the island of eternal sunshine, halloumi, and "siga-siga" (slowly-slowly).

Moving here is a dream come true, but as an interior designer who has helped people from all corners of the globe settle in, I can tell you that a Cyprus home is a totally different beast.

Designing for the Mediterranean isn't just about picking a pretty blue cushion; it’s about surviving a climate that wants to bake you in July and turn you into an icicle in January. Here is the funny, slightly sweaty truth about making a home on this rock.

1. The Summer Sizzle: If it’s Fuzzy, it’s Fired ☀️🔥

Back home, you might love a deep-pile carpet or a heavy velvet sofa. In a Cyprus July, sitting on a lethaer is not the nicest feeling.

  • The Swap: Think linen, cotton, and light wood. You want materials that breathe.

  • The Floor is your Friend: Forget carpets. You want tiles, marble, or stone. They stay deliciously cold underfoot, which is a life-saver when it’s 40°C outside. Plus, when the Saharan dust blows in (and it will!), you can mop it up in a minute.

2. The Winter Plot Twist: The Indoor Chill

Here is the big secret: If you dont have a central heating you might be colder inside a Cyprus house in February than you ever were back home. Most houses here are "fridges" designed to dump heat. Since central heating is rare, the indoor temperature can get... crisp.

  • The Pro Move: You need rugs and throws, but only for three months. Store them in the summer and bring them out to save your toes in the winter.

  • Dont throw or give away your winter clothes you will thank me later.

  • The Damp Factor: Cyprus winters are surprisingly wet. Without a dehumidifier, your walls might decide to grow a personality (and by personality, I mean mold). It’s the least glamorous but very important "accessory" you’ll ever buy.

  • consider tumble dryer for winter times, that would be a very clever move especially if you have kids, as wahing dries in minutes in summer but winter is a completely different story.

3. Living "Outside-In" 🍋🌿

In most parts of the world, a balcony is a "nice to have." In Cyprus, your veranda is your main living room.

  • Material Matters: The sun here is aggressive. Cheap plastic or low-quality metal will crack or rust faster than you can say "Ouzeri." Go for teak, treated aluminum, or high-quality HPL that can stand up to the intense UV rays.

  • Style Flow: Since you’ll spend 8 months a year with the sliding doors open, try to make your terrace look like an extension of your lounge. It makes your house feel twice as big!

The Verdict?

Moving to Cyprus is an amazing lifestyle shift. You’ll swap your heating bills for AC bills and your cozy corners for airy, sun-drenched spaces. It takes a minute to get used to, but once you find that balance of "cool in summer, dry in winter," life here is unbeatable.
